The Cabals
Bloodcall.
Vampires have existed alongside mankind for hundreds of years. They are descended from Marcus Corvinus, the first vampire. For a few hundred years they remained myths to many, but this changed during the 15th century when the Inquisition turned from simply hunting heretics to hunting the creatures of the night. Following this change in direction by the church, a large gathering of the undead occurred at a remote castle in the French Alps, where the vampires debated for many nights about what to do about the situation.
In the end it was decreed that all vampires must agree to hide their existence from the mortal world. However, a brood of vampires led by an ancient Nosferatu named Stoker refused to bow down and hide from the mortal herd. Stoker argued that vampires were put on the earth to teach mankind fear and that mortals existed to be food and tools for the vampire race. If these hunters came for them, they would find the very ranks of hell rallied against them! Stoker?s argument drew many younger vampires to his cause whilst angering the other elders. Taking his followers with him, Stoker departed into the night.
Since that night, Stoker?s followers have taken to calling themselves the Bloodcall. Unlike other cabals they have a loose connection to their members. Any vampire willing to accept the tenants and beliefs of the Bloodcall are welcome members of the sect.
Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defence.
The BPRD is a secret government organization charged with protecting America and the world from supernatural threats. It maintains the services of several supernatural persons, including the legendary Hellboy. The Bureau also collects esoteric artifacts and mystical items too powerful to be left unguarded.
Hellbound.
Prior to his death in 1916, Rasputin had built a sizable cult around him based upon his teachings. He took those who understood the underlying knowledge and inducted them into a secret society that he formed. He called this cabal the ?Hellbound? since in his teachings mankind was doomed to hell anyway following the biblical Caine committing the first sin. He taught his followers certain magic?s and how to unlock their mystical potential. That would have been that had not two events transpired. Firstly, Rasputin started demanding that his followers conduct human sacrifices, in order to gain power from those who wait beyond. While some of his followers were only too happy to engage in such activity, a few bulked at the idea and left. Then angered members of the Russian nobility had him killed. With Rasputin?s death, the Hellbound broke up.
Shortly after the start of the Second World War, Rasputin appeared on the scene again, this time working for the Nazi?s. Hitler?s interest in using the occult to help win the war was perhaps a little rash and ill-thought out, but it allowed Rasputin to begin assembling a vast library of occult paraphernalia.
Rasputin reappeared in the mid-1990?s in Moscow, gathering about him new cult members, both human and monstrous. Fate intervened once again, and a force of evil spirits and ghosts arose one stormy night and were able to infiltrate the cabal?s secret library under Moscow and make off with a large number of occult tomes and artifacts. Since that night, the Hellbound have fought a nightly battle against these ghosts, known as the Furies.
Furies.
The cabal known as the Furies has only existed for several years and few scholars of the occult know exactly where they came from or why they stalk the earth. The cabal is made up of the most heinous and demented souls ever to be incarcerated in the fiery pits of Hell, now free from their torments.
Their freedom comes at a price however. Some years ago, the soul of Rasputin was snatched away by his followers and returned to the earth. This has infuriated the powers that govern the Underworld and they have sent the Furies back to the mortal realm in order to recapture Rasputin. If they can return him to Hell, the Furies have been promised that they shall be freed from the abyss. Those scholars in the know believe that this act will bring to pass the passage in revelations that speaks about the dead walking the earth.
The Furies need to lure Rasputin from his places of power and away from the mystical charms that keep him safe. To achieve this they have stolen occult artifacts and spells from the Hellbound's sanctum in Moscow. Now they wait until the time is right to strike.
R?leyh.
The Great Old Ones (sometimes called the Ogdru Jahad) are god-like entities that predate all known life and science. They once ruled over the earth in prehistoric times, worshipped by proto-creatures of their own creation. Eventually they lost their purchase on the earth and have been trapped deep within the earth, beneath the sea or sealed away in alien and unknowable dimensions. When the "stars are right," they will again arise to spread insanity and madness in their wake.
The Great Old Ones were served by their high priest, the Great Cthulhu, who waits sleeping below the waves of the south pacific. Cthulhu's cult seeks to find a way to either force the correct stellar alignment or a way to awaken their master early so that he may call his brethren back.
Man rules now where They ruled once; They shall soon rule where man rules now. After summer is winter, and after winter summer. They wait patient and potent, for here shall They reign again.
The Order.
The Order of Saint George can trace its roots back to the Middle Ages when it began life as a church sponsored order of inquisitors. Towards the end of the 15th century, the Catholic Church was finally delivered proof that the supernatural truly did exist, in the form of a captured vampire. After many nights of torturing the creature, the inquisition was able to learn from it that the night was filled with monsters preying upon humanity. Before it was finally burnt at the stake, the creature spoke of a prophecy of an end time, when the stars would be right and hell itself would open to release the devil.
For several years the pope and his advisors debated the prophecy and eventually it was decided that the church needed a dedicated branch of the inquisition to investigate the supernatural and find a way to avert the end of days. Despite some cries of outrage that such an act would go against the word of God, the Order of Saint George was created.
The time of the inquisition eventually came to an end, but the Order of Saint George lived on, unknown to even the upper echelons of the Vatican. It has changed considerably since its earliest nights but it still continues to hunt monsters and protect the innocent.
Over the last five hundred years, the Order?s library of occult lore has grown considerably and they are perhaps the greatest single source of knowledge on the occult (though the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence comes close). They have learnt much about the end of days and have identified it as a time when certain Great Old Ones (or Ogdru Jahad) will awaken from an eons long sleep beneath the earth, at the bottom of the sea, or in other dimensions and return to claim the earth from mankind who have claimed it as their own. If this is the prophesied apocalypse then the Order of St. George will be there to stop it.
Wolf Brothers.
Werewolves have existed alongside mankind for hundreds of years. They are descended from William Corvinus, the first werewolf. William was unable to control his changes and soon degenerated into a savage inhuman beast but those bitten by him were able to control their transformations given time. Due to the actions of vampires and monster hunters, the werewolf population is on a steady decline.
The Wolf Brothers are an extended pack of werewolves who have banded together for protection from their enemies. In the modern day, they now search for a means to repopulate their species and find a way to strike back at the vampires who once enslaved them.

Other Factions
Arena of the Unseen.
An underground fighting ring where monsters face one another in battles to the death. The prize is always some innocent victim who has been abducted off the streets. The Arena is one of the few aspects of the "supernatural" which has a vaguely open front, because humans are allowed in as both patrons and fighters.
Echo Team.
Following the Innsmouth raid in the 1920's, the US government recovered numerous tomes and artifacts of an occult nature. Several top researchers went insane before enough of what they were facing was uncovered. In response to this perceived occult threat, the government put together a secret military force known as Delta Green.
In the late 1990's Delta Green dealt primarily with threats from the ?Cthulhu Mythos.? The US Government already has the B.P.R.D. to help combat threats from supernatural sources around the globe, but it was felt by some that another smaller unit-based organization was needed where subtly was paramount. This group was codenamed Echo Team and is charged with capture and study of supernatural and extraterrestrial threats.
There are some rumours that certain departments of Echo Team have a sideline working with the infamous Pandora Labs. This union is said to produce new results from tests performed on monsters. That secretive branch of Echo Team is codenamed The Initiative.
Nightshade Security.
Created in the mid-1990's, Nightshade Security is made up of former Echo Team members. Unable to forget the horrors that they witnessed during their military service, they have banded together to as a civilian outfit to continue the war against the night. Led by Major Harper, who still maintains contact with agents in the military, Nightshade Security hires itself out to companies and private individuals who have reported unexplainable occurences. Certain offices in government have issues with their continued interest in these matters, but cannot fault their success rate.
Pandora Labs.
Originally a university sponsored scientific think-tank called GenTech, it was taken over by the mysterious Mr. Tuttle in the late 1970's and renamed Pandora Labs shortly afterwards. The researchers and staff were directed to the most far-reaching extremes of genetic engineering in the pursuit of knowledge and advancing the human condition. However, the mysterious owner has pushed them into the shadowy and illegal realms of genetic splicing. Unfortunately these experiments have a tendency to go awry and escape from the facilities - something the owner is unusually pleased with.
Stephen Brothers Carnival.
This freakish and sinister carnival first rode into town in the later part of 1962, and has continued to move on every week since seemingly never returning to the same place twice. The carnival is led by a freakish man occasionally named Mr. Dark, though most know him simply as the Ringmaster.
The carnival is a hellish entity designed to lure innocent and good people into the clutches of darker powers. It offers them their most desired wishes but always twists them in some way, drawing the unfortunate individual into the carnival as yet another freak.

A Predator is dispatched to contain it, but the town is destroyed by the military with a low yield nuke to contain the threat. Echo Team performs clean up.
Rasputin returns to destroy the world using Hellboy, and is believed killed.
The world is again threatened by an entity called The First. Sunnydale is destroyed when the Hellmouth collapses, destroyed by Buffy Summers as she thwarts The First.
2006.
Sam and Dean Winchester team up again after their father disappears while on a "hunting trip." They soon learn that he is on the trail of the demon that killed their mother.
2007.
During an investigation by Sam and Dean Winchester, a gateway to Hell is temporarily opened allowing a horde of demons to escape onto the Earth.
2010.
Jason Vorhees is captured by the Initiative. All attempts to execute him fail and it is decided that he will undergo cryonic freezing. When he escapes, the facility is frozen and sealed to prevent his escape.
2040.
Experimental spaceship Event Horizon disappears while testing a new form of propulsion.
2047.
The Event Horizon reappears above Neptune. The rescue ship that is sent to investigate finds that she has been to another dimension (possibly the hell of the cenobites), before it disappears again.
2122.
The commercial towing vessel Nostromo encounters a distress signal from planet LV426. They have a nasty encounter with an Alien which leaves one crew member alive and the Nostromo destroyed.
2127.
Paul Merchant, last member of his family line, creates a space station that is in fact a means of destroying the Cenobites forever. He is successful in this task.
2179.
Planet LV426 (Acheron) has been colonised. When the colonists are directed to check out the site of an alien craft they set in motion a chain of events that will lead to the entire colony being overrun by aliens. The aliens are destroyed when the colony's reactor explodes. The survivors crash on planet Fiorina 161 where the locals are again stalked by an alien.
2379.
The military manage to obtain some of Ripley's blood and attempt to clone her and recover an alien queen. After several attempts they are successful but the ships is soon overrun by the aliens. The survivors escape and crash the ship into South America, destroying the aliens.
2403.
The Earth has become a toxic wasteland. A scientific research ship uncovers a frozen Jason Vorhees and releases him with murderous consequences.
Base Set
Avatar of Cthulhu.
Though the Great Old One still sleeps and dreams beneath the sea, he sometimes has need to act upon his own unknowable desires. When those times come, he awards one of his spawn with a measure of his own power. This Avatar is then free to walk abroad performing whatever task Great Cthulhu requires.
Bane Wolf.
Anyone bitten by a werewolf bite and survives, will himself transform into a rampaging beast at the next full moon. ?Bane Wolf? is a term coined by the Order to describe such an unfortunate individual. They are often worse than pure-blood werewolves, as they have no control over their transformation or what they do when under the influence of the wolf spirit.
Example: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (episode: Phases and Wild at Heart).
Bishop Luzifer.
Head of the church sponsored Order, Bishop Luzifer has been able to see spirits and demons his entire life. It was only when he joined the Order as a lowly initiate that he learnt he could perform an exorcism with just his own will. With this God-gifted ability he has saved hundreds of people and risen within the ranks of the Order to his current position.
Blood Demon.
Certain ancient prophecies speak of the End of Days, when Hell shall erupt on Earth. It is to that end that Hell has sent this powerful demon to the mortal world. Known in the Apocrypha simply as ?The Blood Demon,? it is a beast with a lunatic cult of fanatical followers who serve its every whim. It has the power to see past, present and future via the act of human sacrifice. Its cult performs these sacrifices to the unholy powers on the dark of the moon each month. It is through the deeds witnessed that the Blood Demon can foresee the coming Apocalypse.
Blood Vamp.
The vampiric condition brings with it a number of supernatural powers, ranging from mesmerism to fortitude. Some vampires seem able to tap into the magical force animating their bodies, and can use it cast powerful spells. These individuals known unceremoniously as Blood Vamps and are a much sought after resource for elder vampires seeking an edge against their rivals.
Brine Witch.
When the US military destroyed the corrupted town of Innsmouth in the early 1930?s, they dispersed the powerful cults of Cthulhu and Dagon, scattering the cultists and driving the Deep Ones further out to see. The half-human hybrids born of unison between human women and Deep One were likewise dispersed. They hid away the decades in seclusion only venturing forth for food and the occasional human sacrifice on auspicious times.
In recent years however, the eldest of their kind have felt drawn to the waters of the South pacific where Great Cthulhu waits dreaming. They have joined with the Deep Ones in the search for a means to raise their ancient master for his watery tomb.
Chainsaw.
Urban legends have a way of gaining life through the belief of those who tell the stories and the fears of those who listen. These figments arise in the places they are said to walk, waiting for the time when the conditions are right and they can manifest.
In the Deep South, for instance, there have many stories told about travelers on back roads who stop for gas only to find themselves hunted by inbred maniacs with chainsaws. While a few instances may true, the rest of these are figments given form by the fears and anxieties of their victims.
Constrictor.
Large snakes can be found in tropical climates around the world, and there are numerous horror stories of them smothering sleeping people and eating them alive.
Example: Anaconda.
Deep Ones
Amphibious beings that serve the Great Old Ones Cthulhu, Dagon, and Hydra; servitors of the Ogdru Jahad also appear to be Deep Ones, but are typically mutated into this form from originally human stock. However, given the Deep Ones' propensity for interbreeding with humans, many innocent humans may have dormant Deep One DNA and be vulnerable to gradual transformation into a Deep One.
Deep Ones build cyclopean cities on the ocean floor around the world, the most notable in recent history being Y'ha-nthlei off the Massachusetts coast. Y'ha-nthlei was destroyed in 1928 as part of Echo Team's first mission, while numerous hybrids were captured in the nearby town of Innsmouth.
Example: Dagon.
Devil Imp.
The infernal realms have their vermin just as the mortal world has its. Devil imps are the undesirable creatures that infest the lower levels of Hell. They are as unwanted down there as they are up here. When portals are opened and demons summoned, there is often enough time that these little horrors crawl through and escape into our world. Thankfully they are few in number and rarely cause trouble for long enough before either monster hunters or other monsters send them back. The last time they arrived in any real numbers was in the late 1960?s during Soviet experiments into dimensional portals.
Dire Werewolf.
The oldest living werewolf, and pack alpha of the Wolf Brothers. This ancient creature has become old and decrepit to the point that he is unable to sustain his hybrid form for very long. So far he has been able to hide this infirmity from his fellow werewolves, but at some point in the near future his weakness will become too much to bare, and the cabal will be thrown into chaos as they fight to replace him as pack alpha.
Dire Wolf.
An aspect of the primeval wolf spirit. Dire wolves have stalked the wilderness for millennia, but the expansion of civilisation has encroached on their territory. On certain times of the year they enter the cities of man to hunt and thin the herd. When the homeless vagrants go missing no one bats an eye and the killings continue.
Dog Soldier.
The American military has known about the existence of supernatural beings for decades and have even experimented on them to create a ?super soldier.? The Dog Soldier program is one such experiment that got away from them. After the capture of a werewolf in Texas in the mid-1980?s several volunteers were injected with samples of blood. The test subjects underwent a violent transformation and broke free from the compound. Despite attempts to capture them, several of them remain at large.
Evil Leprechaun.
The "fairies" do not have a proper name. They are creatures from the dawn of time, not alien, but part of the world, unseen by humanity. Mankind has ascribed positive attributes to them, but they are dangerous, part myth, part spirit, part real all jumbled together, unbound by anything we understand.
Example: Leprechaun.
Executed Convict.
There are numerous stories and movies that tell the story of an innocent man convicted and sentenced to the electric chair, only to return and secure revenge on the real killer. The truth is much worse. It is more likely that the spirit of the executed man returns to stalk those who sentenced and judged him, and then haunts the prison where he spent his last days.
Faith Priest.
The church has known the truth about the supernatural since the time of the Inquisition when the faithful put numerous monsters to the torch. These nights only a select few are ever told the truth about what stalks humanity, and they are given holy relics and tasked to hunting down evil.
Field Agent.
During the raid on Innsmouth in the 1930's, the US military was confronted with entities of a supernatural origin. It took many years of studying the tomes and relics recovered on that fateful day for the military to learn the depth of the threat that faced mankind. The response was to create Echo Company. These men are the US military?s monster hunters. They are the best of the best and trained to handle any supernatural threat from ghosts to aliens. Whenever monsters clash and innocents are hunted, these men will be there as our best hope.
Ghostfinder.
The Ghost Finders are a civilian band of supernatural investigators, sponsored by various private individuals and universities. They have had some luck in investigating the supernatural though have failed to back it up with any reputable evidence. They often return with blurring photos of ?orbs? and barely understandable recordings which they claim are voices of the dead. Recently, while investigating reports of monsters in the Kentucky back woods, the team encountered a pack of hungry zombies, and almost losing a member to them. Following that they have taken to arming themselves when on a hunt, just in case.
Great Cthulhu.
High priest of the Great Old Ones, Great Cthulhu currently sleeps in the corpse city of R'leyh deep beneath the Pacific Ocean. The other Great Old Ones and Outer Gods have become trapped or forced into slumber due to an unfavourable alignment of stars. Through dreams and other omens, Great Cthulhu directs his servants - both human and monstrous, to work towards returning the Great Old Ones.
Example: The Call of Cthulhu.
Headless Horseman.
The infamous leader of the Furies, the Headless Horseman is the basis for the story ?Sleepy Hollow.? Now his restless soul seeks to return to life so that I might escape Hell forever. In return for securing the soul of Rasputin, who has escaped Hell's clutches, the demonic powers that be have offered him his freedom. He has gathered about him other restless and evil souls to achieve this task. In order to lure Rasputin out into the open, he has stolen ancient relics from the Hellbound cult.
Example: Sleepy Hollow.
Hook.
An urban legend given a semblance of life by the telling of his story. If enough people come to believe the truth of his story, Hook steps from the shadows ready to continue his killings. The more murders he commits the more the fear level rises and the stronger he becomes, until some brave soul is able to destroy him.
Example: Supernatural (episode: Hook Man).
Jack the Ripper.
In the summer of 1888 the East End of London was stalked by this mysterious figure who murdered five prostitutes before vanishing back into the night. There have been many attempts to investigate and reveal the identity of this killer but no one knows for sure who he was or why he committed his grisly work. Presumed dead.
Example: Jack The Ripper.
Jekyll and Hyde/Dr Henry Jekyll.
A Victorian scientist who experimented with alchemy to create a potion that would allow him to remove his evil side. Instead, the potion releases that evil side as Edward Hyde - a murderous insane monster. Both are presumed dead.
Example: Dr Jekyll and Mister Hyde.
Jester.
The original "Jester" killings were the modus operandi of a man named Sunny, who worked as a clown on children's television. After several decapitation murders were tracked back him, Sunny was gunned down by the FBI. After a few years, copycat murders have begun to appear in cities across America. Has Sunny returned from the dead to continue his work, or some other strange force at work?
Lynch Ghost.
Most often encountered in what remains of the Old West, these spirits are the ghosts of murderers hung for their crimes. These restless souls continue to haunt the sites of their death, preying on travelers. Some have been documented as hunting down the descendents of those who condemned them to death by the noose.
In Europe these spirits are known as Gallows Ghosts, and were buried at crossroads so as to stop them finding their way back to haunt the living.
Matron Mother.
These are leaders among a secret order of nuns known as the Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Agony. The order devotes itself to the following works: the 'purification' and indoctrination of new acolytes, providing communion and succor for unholy creatures, and performing occult rites destined to bring about Hell on Earth. Our Lady of Perpetual Agony is the church of choice for many vampires, largely because they know that tithing a portion of their victims is the best way to keep St Angelique from hunting them down.
Morgana
The oldest known specimen of Blood Vamp, she witnessed the Roman withdrawal from British lands and seduced the dux bellorum who would be remembered in legend as Arthur. She wielded the Inquisition as a weapon against her rivals, until it grew too powerful to control, and she has walked the eldritch shores of R'lyeh when it has, for a brief few nights, emerged from the ocean depths. So ancient is she that blood alone cannot sustain her, so she has wrought a supernatural focus to anchor her spirit in her undead body. It was she who found Rasputin dying and gave him immortality in lieu of a watery grave. She is either Rasputin's lover, his disciple, or his subtle master. None who dare ask have ever survived.
Mr. Fright.
The entities known as Mr. Fright are the creation of childhood fears of things in the cupboard or under the bed. Created by those same fears, they manifest on cold dark nights to terrorize and ultimately kill children in the beds. Sometimes the child survives traumatized, only to find that Mr. Fright returns years later to finish the job.
Nosferatu.
When a vampire lives for several centuries, its body undergoes a change. It loses its former appearance becoming hideous and demonic to look upon. But with this degradation comes new powers unknown to the majority of other vampires. These Nosferatu, as they are known, tend to become loners, shunning contact with their own kind. Instead they locate new lairs and prey upon foolish mortals who dare come too close.
Example: Nosferatu, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Welcome to the Hellmouth).
Outpatient.
It began as a game: look for the eerie, the inexplicable, and the occult in your life, and post them to the Wicked World website. Pretty swiftly, even an ordinary life begins to look like a horror story. It's a pleasant diversion for horror fans, but it has been known to have a disturbing effect on emotionally unstable players. As the game has progressed, and the body of 'evidence' has grown, more and more players have vanished, breaking down and being hospitalized. Those players most infected by the horrors of the game, both real and imagined, have started to become them...
R'Leyh Guardian.
One of Great Cthulhu's eldest star spawn, this ancient horror guards and protects the sunken tombs and temples of the Great Old Ones, preparing for the day when the stars shall again be right. Only when foolish investigators and monster hunters interfere in their grand destiny does the Guardian arise from the depths.
Rasputin/The Mad Monk
History tells us that this mystic was assassinated in 1916, yet the files of Echo Team and the BPRD indicate he was present at the ritual that brought Hellboy to earth in 1944. Agents of both groups have reported numerous encounters since then, including several confirmed kills. Contradictory data seems to indicate that he is a sorcerer, a vampire, an avatar or servant of the Ogdru Jahad (the Great Old Ones), or even a Cenobite of the Gash. At times he has appeared to be a leader of the Hellbound occult society; at others he has seemed a lone maniac. Analysts conclude that multiple entities are using the Rasputin identity to disguise their activities, and if the original mystic lives still, his identity cannot be verified.
Example: Hellboy.
Razor Vixen.
An all girl gang of female vampire mercenaries, the Razor Vixens sell their services to any willing to pay the price, though usually their clients pay the ultimate price. The eldest members of the gang are indoctrinated into the Bloodcall and directed to serve that order in all things.
Reaper of Souls.
Death itself is a real force. Unseen by mortal eyes, this primordial entity is always on hand to snatch souls away to the afterlife. Some are able to cheat death but not forever. When the spirit of Death decides to reveal itself, it takes on the cloaked skull-face image most familiar in popular culture.
Runaway.
In the heart of the inner city something dark stalks the homeless by night. Fear is a powerful force and their fears and worries have given birth to a shape that hunts them in the dark. It takes the form of a young woman dressed as they and carrying a sharp blade. She hates and eases that hate by killing those who have brought her into existence. This no single entity, for she seems to stalk the homeless in every major city around the world.
Scarecrow.
The original scarecrows were pagan effigies designed to protect crops and to ensure that the local town flourished. Every year the townsfolk would make a human sacrifice to the gods to keep the scarecrow appeased. When those rites are not performed, the ancient scarecrow animates and comes to collect its own sacrifice from among those who created it or their descendents.
Example: Supernatural (episode: Scarecrow).
Shambling Zombie.
Zombies can be animated by a number of differing causes, such as the T-Virus, unusual radiation or black magic. One thing they all have in common is a desire to eat the flesh of the living, passing their condition on by biting their prey. Thankfully zombie outbreaks are rare and have so far been contained.
Examples: Night/Dawn/Day/Land of the Living Dead, and Resident Evil.
Skeletal Maiden.
A woman who commits suicide for love or over a cheating lover, may return to stalk the world as an enraged spirit known in occult tomes as a Skeletal Maiden or often ?a woman in white.? They seek to possess the living in order that they might extract revenge upon those who wronged them, even if those responsible are long dead. They rarely get the opportunity however, as there presence within the body causes it to rapidly rot and decay, killing the host and causing the Maiden to again seek a new host.
Skeleton.
These personifications of death are raised by necromancers or other more powerful undead. Unlike zombies, skeletons are not self-directing, and are easily trapped, or can be lead into dangerous terrain. However, once the directive is commanded by their masters, their drive is relentless, and means are brutal. They only stop once destroyed. Piercing a skeleton is useless, considering they lack the flesh that would otherwise damage them.
Sorority Zombie.
There are leaders even among the undead. When Doctor Herbert West caused a zombie outbreak in Arkham during the 1920?s, a number of his test subjects exhibited an unusual level of intelligence and ability to lead their fellow zombies. Since then, there always seems to be at least one zombie in any given outbreak with the intelligence to command the others.
Stoker.
The monstrous insane Nosferatu who leads the Bloodcall cabal. Age has done more to this monster than warp his physical form. Stoker is so old that he has been driven insane by the weight of ages and the sheer number of years he has existed. Despite being the leader of his cabal, his insanity already has other vampires looking to remove him from his throne.
Terror Demon.
Servitors of Hell, these demons can be summoned to the mortal realm by certain dark magic?s. They are masters of fear and terror, able to drive even the most stalwart character into a fitful panic. In return for their services, they claim the still warm heart of their prey.
The Fiend.
During the Second World War, Hitler?s occult scientists attempted to continue the works of Victor Frankenstein and create a powerful new soldier from the bodies of fallen men. Their experiment was successful and the creature came to life. However it was utterly insane and slew the scientists before disappearing into the night. Though it was never seen again during the war, reports of its appearance have spread throughout Europe in the years since then.
Tickler.
These unusual demons kill by tickling their prey to death. Their victims are found dead in the fetal position with wide insane grins on their faces. Scholars of demonology are puzzled by the existence of such an infernal creature, but all can agree that anyone slain by these monsters will die with a smile on their faces.
Tomb Mummy.
He no longer remembers what crime he committed to be sealed away; he only knows that he hurts. The Tomb Mummy was pulled from beneath the Egyptian sands in 1897 and traveled the world until he came to rest in Chicago last year. It was the theft of his treasures that awoke him, and set him lose upon the night. In order to remain awake, he must regularly feast upon the blood rich organs of others.
Vampire Enforcer.
The Bloodcall does not believe in hiding from mortals, but it does realize that such a practice draws their enemies to them. Each branch of the cabal has dedicated enforcers who protect the coven from vampire hunters and hunt down werewolves that stray into their territory.
Example: Underworld.
Vampire Hunter.
Vampires have staked mankind since its earliest nights. In return, there have been those who hunt vampires for a living. Among them there is a legend of the ?The Slayer,? one girl in all the world who has the supernatural strength to fight vampires.
Example: Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Widow Octavia/The Widow.
An ancient and primeval arachnid spirit. For millennia she has slept away the ages, emerging every few centuries to feed. However, the over population of the Earth, humanity spreading across the globe unchecked, has awoken her early. She has crawled from her lair deep underground to feast heartily and lay her eggs before she returns to the earth once more.
Zombie Cop.
Since the 1970?s there have been a number of small zombie outbreaks around the world. Thankfully they have been contained and covered up, but there are always casualties. In the initial outbreak recorded in Pittsburgh in 1978, it was the police who were to suffer the most casualties as they tried to save as many people as possible.
Example: Dawn of the Dead.
Zombie Lawyer.
Some zombies seem able to retain a semblance of their intelligence, even if the personality has long since gone. While the name may be truthful or not, these flesh-eaters seem able to goad on their zombie companions on to hunt the living, regardless of their physical condition.
The Lab
Abe Sapien.
Found in a jar with the labal Icthyo Sapien in the basement of a Washington D.C. hospital, Abe Sapien is a water-breathing member of the B.P.R.D. A superior marksman and hand-to-hand combatant, Abe is also the spiritual backbone of the Bureau.
Example: Hellboy.
Agony/Angelique.
Legends and rumours about this being abound, yet few facts are known for sure. Known as Agony to her fellow vampires, she is thought to be an ancient whose thirst for blood was dwarfed by her lust for new sensations and her hunger for fresh souls. In time, her predations brought Agony to the attention of the Cenobites who brought her to Hell and transformed her into the creature known as Angelique. In the centuries that followed, cults sprung up around her, devoted to St. Angelique - Our Lady of Perpetual Agony. Recently, however, it seems that she is no longer content with the veneration and sacrifices of her devotees, for she walks the earth again to claim new victims both mortal and monstrous.
Alien.
Relatively little is understood of the true nature of these mysterious and deadly xenomorphs beyond their gruesome method of reproduction and their universal hostility to all other forms of life. Known to infiltrate and infest settled regions, these hive-minded killers possess concentrated molecular acid which serves as their blood coupled with a variety of natural weapons. Given their tenacious nature and unusually high levels of cunning, they are considered by many to be the ultimate living weapon (and by the Predator race, the ultimate prey).
Example: the Aliens movies, Aliens vs. Predator, and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.
Alien Queen.
Each Alien hive is led by a Queen. She lays the eggs that will in turn become facehuggers, which populate their species. Usually they remain at the centre of the hive, laying eggs and guarding the young. However, when the hive is threatened she can tear herself free and will stop at nothing to destroy the threat.
Example: Alien, and Aliens vs Predator.
Archaeologist.
Brave men and women venture into steamy jungles and ancient ruins in search of gold, treasure and fame. Many find it, but a few learn that such places hold ancient and unimaginable horror. Those who survive contact with the mysteries of ancient tombs learn that to be armed and prepared is essential in their work.
Example: The Mummy, and The Mummy Returns.
Asylum Spirit.
These demented souls were once inmates of the most heinous mental asylums. Tortured in life by mad doctors trying to drive the insane sane, their spirits linger in this world passing on the curse of insanity in hopes of curing themselves enough that they may pass on to the next world.
Example: Supernatural (episode: Asylum).
Athena.
When Pandora Labs came to the attention of the Order, the scientists were forced to create something to defend themselves. Of all their creations, Athena is the only one which has not turned on its creators. The machine gifted life by dark magic?s guards the headquarters of the corporation from all who would work to bring the Labs down.
Brain Eater.
Pandora Labs has performed some twisted experiments since they first came upon the scientific scene, but their attempts to promote psychic activity have met with some truly fiendish results. These test subjects have found that eating fresh human brains stimulates their own psychic abilities. However, it fades over time prompting them to keep killing.
Candy Striper.
Hospitals and blood banks are prefect feeding grounds for vampires. A few such institutions have unknowingly hired vampires to work the night shifts. Unexplained deaths among patients and staff are a regularly reported event in the local news.
Captain Ben Daimio.
Captain Daimio?s distinguished military career ended in 2001, when he was killed during a mission. However, Daimio spontaneously returned to life and now serves as commander of a B.P.R.D. field team.
Carnage Bot.
Originally built by a Pandora Labs team to fight on the Bot Battle TV series, this machine proved good enough that it was bought up by the US military. Unfortunately since then there have been a number of unfortunate friendly fire ?accidents? and dismemberments caused by these machines.
Corp. Commander/Major Harper.
Every Nightshade Security team is led by an experienced ex-military commander. The company itself is led by Major Harper, a former Echo Team commander who has seen combat against all manner of monstrous foes. He was originally picked up for Echo Team during a tour of duty in Vietnam, after his team was hunted and killed by a Predator. Harper was the only survivor.
Corp. Response.
Nightshade Security is a private company made up of former Echo Team members. Unable to forget the horrors they have faced, they have banded together to both earn a living and continue to fight the good fight.
Doctor Von Raechter.
This deranged German doctor performs experiments on unwilling test subjects to see how they react to certain stimuli and experiences. Generally they either end up dead or so helplessly deranged that they commit savage murders. Recently, he has been approached to work with some of Pandora Lab?s top physicians.
Evil Cosmonaut/Zombie Astronaut.
In the near future when mankind reaches out into space, we will face more than alien monsters and ancient races. The supernatural exists up there just as it does here on Earth.
Frothweiler.
Pandora Labs experiments on animals have taken a rather unpleasant twist. Attempts to splice DNA from extraterrestrials and supernatural creatures into dogs have produced these hideous mutants. More remote facilities actually breed them and use them as guard animals.
Giant Amoeba.
This remarkable life form fell to Earth years ago inside a meteor. It had a taste for human flesh that bordered on insatiable. After it wiped out an entire town it was thought destroyed by the military. However small chunks of it survived and the creature resurfaces from time to time.
Example: The Blob.
Grey.
Life exists out in the farthest reaches of the universe. The alien creatures known as the ?grey?s? have been visiting the Earth for decades and are well known to the military and world governments. What they don?t know is that these insidious creatures are performing terrifying experiments on us, prior to launching an invasion of the Earth!
Example: The X-Files (numerous episodes).
Gyrus.
A cybernetic machine designed by Pandora Labs as the perfect riot control tool for the government. However, the prototype took on a mind of its own, slaughtered everyone at the San Diego facility before vanishing into the night. Current whereabouts: Unknown.
Hardhat Zombie.
It?s the common man who suffers the most when the world experiences another zombie outbreak.
Hellbaby.
As an infant, the demon hellboy was summoned to earth by a Nazi occult experiment. Fortunately his appearance was anticipated by the allies, who intercepted the ?Hellbaby? and brought him back to the United States.
Example: Hellboy.
Hellboy.
As a demon named Anung Un Rama, Hellboy was brought to Earth as an infant by Nazi occultists. He was rescued by Allied forces and raised by the United States? Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD). He grew up to be a large red-skinned demon with a tail, horns (which he files down to stumps), and a big stone right hand. Although a bit gruff, he shows none of the malevolence thought to be intrinsic to demons and works with other strange creatures in the B.P.R.D.
Example: Hellboy.
Insect Man.
The experiments that led to the Frothweiler were soon applied to human test subjects. Pandora Labs sought to engage in some radical DNA splicing, adding insectoid traits to their ?volunteers.? The results were highly successful but disturbing even for the scientists. Following a break out strange hives have been reported in at least two states, and they seem to be spreading.
Irradiated Zombie.
The first appearance of these dangerous undead occurred shortly after the disaster at Chernobyl. The local countryside has been evacuated and the military regular patrols the outskirts keeping an eye out for signs that the radiation has awoken the dead once more. Thankfully the radiation serves to destroy them before long.
Jigsaw.
The were-creature known as Jigsaw is a unique anomaly among his breed. Other werewolves can only shift into a wolf aspect, but Jigsaw can take on the form or composite form of any natural animal he can imagine.
Johann Kraus.
Johann?s body was incinerated in a psychic disaster, but his spirit remained intact. The B.P.R.D. recruited Johann as an agent and developed a special suit to contain his ectoplasmic essence. Even disembodied, Johann remains a gifted medium who can communicate freely with the dead.
Lab Assistant.
All good (should that be evil?) mad scientists need help with their depraved experiments. Whether or not they were mad before hand, any who would help with these horrid schemes are driven slowly insane and warped by their experiences.
Lab Gorilla.
Since apes are not so different genetically speaking, it comes as no surprise that they are often used as test subjects where using human subjects would be considering dangerous or unethical. However, angering these mighty apes can prove to be a bad move. There are stories that apes have escaped from research centers into the wilds, where they prey upon unsuspecting travelers who cross their path.
Liz Sherman.
Liz became a ward of the B.P.R,D. at the age of 11, when the violent emergence of her pyrokinetic abilities resulted in the deaths of over thirty people, including her immediate family. She has spent the intervening years struggling to control her abilities and cope with the trauma that they have wrought.
Example: Hellboy.
Man in Black.
Thought to be some vanguard in the arsenal of the Grey aliens, these freaky figures appear on the scene after sightings of UFO?s. They cover up the existence of their masters and work to keep the Earth passive and ill-equipped to defend themselves from their masters.
Mi-Go.
The Mi-Go are a race native to the cold wastes of Yuggoth (Pluto) with ties to the Great Old Ones. They have no real interest in mankind but on occasion seek to collect specific individuals, or rather, their brains. A Mi-Go is dispatched to Earth to find that person and return their brain to Yuggoth.
Morgue Attendant.
Deranged murders seem to find themselves in professions where their weird tendencies are hardly noticed. Working in a morgue, surrounded by the dead is a prefect way of covering up one?s crimes and having a little something to play with too.
Muttering Igor.
The assistant of a mad scientist needs more than just good science knowledge. He may be called on to protect his master and his creations from those who would see them destroyed.
Example: Van Helsing.
Plague Vagrant.
Dwelling in the filth and sewers of humanity can have an unusual effect upon homeless people. Living unseen in the forgotten corners of the world are people who have bonded with the vermin and filth. This connection has made them more animal than man. Upon accepting the presence of the rat spirit, the vagrant undergoes a shocking transformation. His body becomes more rat-like and when endangered, his physical form can split into a multitude of rats, and reform somewhere else.
Pod Mother/Tendril Queen.
When plant and animal DNA is mixed horror ensues. This evil creature was the result of yet another Pandora Labs experiments out in the Midwest. It proved too much for them and the scientists who worked on the project became the first Pod Zombies. The Pod Mother seeks to destroy and devour mankind, letting plant life reclaim the Earth.
Pod Zombie.
Sometimes it?s not dark magic or an unknown virus which animates the dead. Sometimes science is all it takes. Unfortunate scientists who assisted in the experiments that led to the creation of the Pod Mother now protect her and her brood, animated by sentient vegetation.
Predator
An alien species whose culture revolves around the hunt. They seek only the most dangerous prey, and if unable to find worthy prey roaming free, they will seed the area with Alien xenomorphs. It was originally thought that first contact was recent, but occult researchers have turned up disturbing evidence to the contrary. Val Verde folklore speaks of El Diablo cazador de hombres, "The demon to makes trophies of men," which appears in the hottest summers. Ancient grimoires speak of creatures called Yautja or Hish-qu-Ten that are drawn to heat and conflict which took the skins and skulls of great warriors. It is possible that one of these beings slew the sorcerer Abdul Alhazrad in Damascus. The Yautja are also credited with building cyclopean cities to rival those of R'lyeh, now frozen beneath the Antarctic ice cap.
Example: Predator, Predator 2, Aliens vs. Predator, and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.
Pride Warrior.
Feline inhabitants of a parallel dimensions where humanity are slaves and prey. They have recently detected the presence of our reality and have begun to slip through the cracks between worlds, looking for a worthy prey to hunt.
Proto Cyborg.
In 1945, the US army recovered alien technology from a crashed ?grey? scout ship. Using that highly advanced technology they tried to create a super soldier. The attempt failed back then but they still continue to work on the project, just in case the alien menace should finally arrive.
Pyromaniac/Little Damon.
Damon is a young boy born with an incredible gift ? the power to create and control flames with his mind. However, he only has the mind of an 8-year old and all that it entails. His family have already moved three times since he was born, each time the family home having burnt to the ground.
Reptoid.
The Reptoid is the leader of the ?Grey? invasion of the Earth. It is a powerful psychic who uses incredible powers to protect itself, and disorientate its enemies. It is the first of its race to arrive on our world but it won?t be the last.
Reptosapien.
Pandora Labs? attempts to branch into medical care have created these strange creatures. In adding reptile DNA to test subjects who had lost limbs, the unexpected results worked too well. Limbs and organs were restored, but the individual de-evolved into a savage creature ? half man, half lizard.
Roger the Homunculus.
Roger was created in the 16th century, but lay dormant until Liz Sherman found him and temporarily transferred her psychokinetic energy into him. Now fitted with a portable generator, Roger has become an enthusiastic member of the B.P.R.D.
Scrubber.
Pandora Labs keeps a select team of clean up experts to ensure that the world never learns of their experiments and failures. Using a wide range of acids, chemicals and radiation equipment they are highly skilled at keeping it all a secret. Unfortunately, prolonged exposure to strange chemicals tends to mutate the poor worker into something unnatural.
Valerie Elle.
Valerie worked as a security expert for the Pandora Labs until she realized what abominations and horrors they were unleashing upon an unsuspecting world. Enough was finally enough and Valerie took off on her own. She continues to hunt all breeds of monsters while looking for a way to close Pandora Labs once and for all.
Vat-Grown Clone.
After finding that members of the various cabals had infiltrated their facilities, the doctors at Pandora Labs created a breed of guard to protect their work. Created from cells donated by their security team members, these creatures were geared towards different threats and intruders.
Vlad the Impaler.
The historical figure upon which the Dracula legend is based. Whether this prince of Wallchia was indeed a vampire or not will never be known, unless he rears his face again in the modern nights.
Velociraptor.
Taking their cue from the faux science of Jurassic Park, the scientists at Pandora Labs have succeeded at cloning dinosaurs. Like the dinosaurs of that novel, life found a way and a few surviving velociraptor?s have escaped into the wild. Thankfully, they are all female and can?t breed. Right?
Example: Jurassic Park.
Werewolf Orderly.
In an attempt to prop up their dying species, the Wolf Brothers have inserted their own members into various hospitals and medical facilities. They use their positions to find a way to work on a medical cure for their slow extinction. Woe betide the unfortunate doctor or patient who stumbles upon their work.
Zombie Patient.
During zombie outbreak?s medical stations and safe zones are flooded with people seeking treatment for their injuries. But since zombie bites are infectious, these safe points and hospitals are soon overrun by the flesh-eating undead.
Example: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (episode: Dead Man?s Party).
Zombie Trooper.
Zombies who were formally trained military personnel seem able to retain their knowledge of firearms and tactics, making them more dangerous than ever.
Example: Day of the Dead.
Freakshow
Animal Trainer/Alana.
Like most of those who work the Stephen Brothers carnival, the animal trainers are figments created by the circus itself to draw new prey in. They work the animals and guide them when released upon the unsuspecting public.
Alana is the figment that oversees the animals care and well-being between hunts. Unusually she has developed an affection for her charges and has an almost mortal love for them. Though she performs the will of the circus, she takes great delight in tearing apart any who would harm or mock her pets
Bat Boy/Eddie the Bat Boy.
In the caves and caverns beneath the Rocky Mountains lair a breed of monstrous vampires who have evolved to share the form of bats. These vampires take flight by night seeking warm blood.
One such creature was drawn to the Stephen Brothers Circus several years ago where it was accepted into the ranks of the freaks. Named Eddie, he was considered too tame to be of use to the freak show, so he is used as a bloodhound, hunting down those who escape the circus and bringing them back to dead or alive.
Bogeyman.
Some say that it was the first entity to be named ?Mr Fright? by children. The Bogeyman is a nightmarish entity that stalks children at night. It hides in cupboards and beneath beds, tormenting the kids until just before they scream, it snatches them away never to be seen again.
Cannibal Clowns/The Snack Pack.
The Stephen Brothers carnival travels the Midwest of America, stopping in any town they find on their way. During every visit there are savage murders, which leave the local police baffled. Each victim is found decapitated, though the heads are never found. While the entire carnival is made up of freaks and monsters, it is the insane human clowns who are responsible for the murders.
Carny/Skell.
The human work force of the Stephen Brothers are an odd bunch with small hands and an odd smell of cabbage. They work the stalls and rides, watching for easy marks or easy prey. They are led by a man named Skell who reports only to the Ringmaster. Skell is a former murderer who worked a variety of travelling shows, performing a murder at each one in a different style so as not to draw attention. It was whilst working one such murder that he was found by the agents of the Ringmaster and brought into his service.
Carousel Ghost.
This poor innocent spirit was one of the first to visit the Stephen Brothers circus when it first rolled into town. Poor Emma wished that she could ride the merry-go-round for ever and ever. The sadistic circus granted her that very dream. The Ringmaster has offered to grant Emma her freedom should a certain lost soul ever be captured, but such an promise will most likely never come to pass and she will be condemned to her lonely prison for eternity.
Cotswold Giant.
Mark Thomas was a giant of man living in the Cotswolds in the early 1900's. At the time of his death in 1945 he had been responsible for over fifteen murders though he was never convicted of any of them. Upon his death his will demanded that he be preserved and placed in a glass case so that all may gaze upon him. His preserved body eventually passed from owner to owner until he was bought by the Ringmaster. Though few have ever seen him move, the fact that every morning his case has shattered and another body lies at his feet, would seem to indicate that he is continuing his murderous spree.
Elephant Man/Bull.
Everyone has heard the story of John Merrick, the Elephant Man, and he has become something of an legend. The Stephen Brothers carnival has created a figment of the Elephant Man to draw unsuspecting prey to the freak show. It wears the form most often thought of my people as to what such a person would look like. When it is alone with prey, the carnival seals the freak show down and the Elephant Man stalks and hunts his prey, dismembering them with a big axe. Their parts are either fed to Bertha or give to the zombies that work the concession stands.
Escape Artist/Voodini.
The majority of performers working the Stephen Brothers carnival are in fact figments created by the animating force that creates the circus. The escape artist top billed, the infamous Voodini is a murderous figment that even the Ringmaster has troubles controlling. He has the power to project his essence into a member of the audience, swapping bodies with them and committing heinous acts for which the confused and innocent victim has no knowledge.
Fan Dancer/Crimson.
The Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Agony were once ordinary girls before they were shown the higher virtues of ultimate sensation, purified from any preference for pleasure over pain. As it is said, though, many are called but few are chosen, and rather than rising to the ranks of Matron Mothers, many Sisters perform lesser duties, such as performing or becoming sacrifices to St Angelique. A few flee the order, seeking to return to their previous lives or carry on half-remembered ambitions, but most of these are so altered that they cannot return to lay society. One former Sister has found her place at the Stephen Brothers carnival as the exotic dancer Crimson, elevating carnal pleasures to an entirely new level. Others have found that their talents lie in similar directions.
Fiji Mermaid.
The original fraudulent Fiji Mermaid made a huge impact on viewers when it went on show. Such creations have become an expected norm at a freak show, and the Stephen Brothers carnival is no exception. The only difference is that this sewn together fish and monkey comes to life at night, crawls from its tank and stalks the board walks for late night prey. The mortal carnys who serve the carnival entity rarely walk abroad at night for the monster will attack them as readily as unsuspecting townsfolk.
Firebreather/Scorch.
The Stephen Brothers Carnival has a number of humans who willingly serve it. Scorch and his fellow firebreathers are just such black hearted individuals. Scorch himself once tried to leave when he realized what had happened and was almost consumed by hellfire as punishment. To this day his skin remains painfully blistered and scabbed as a reminder that the circus is both his traveling home and his prison.
Firefighter/Big Red.
Sometimes monsters and monster hunters alike set fires to cover their tracks and to hide their actions from others. When such fires rage out of control it falls to the heroic firefighters to dose the flames. When fire hasn't been enough to destroy the evil, the firefighters themselves become involved.
"Big Red" was the name given to Mick Red, an Irish fireman whose town became infested with zombies in 2006. While his fellow firefighters tried to contain the threat and fire fires started by foolish monster hunters, Big Red set to the task of sending the walking dead back to their graves with a mighty swing of his axe. Afterwards he gave up being a Firefighter to concentrate on hunting monsters.
Flying Monkeys/Lost Winkies.
These little terrors were once monkeys from other circuses, which have been transformed into winged horrors by the Ringmaster himself. He uses them as spies and messengers when secrecy is important.
The Ringmaster has his favorites, which he calls his "Lost Winkies" - a private joke which none but he understands.
Freddie von Bludd / Alex von Bludd / Von Bludd Brothers.
Freddie and Alex were twins who shared everything. They grew up in a happy home, with loving parents. They went everywhere together, including the freaky circus that rode into town one hot summer evening. The two boys wandered the stalls and games, enjoying the spooky atmosphere. Then, Freddie turned around and his brother had wandered off. Frightened for the first time in his life, he ran around in a panic. He couldn't find Alex nor his parents. Then, he bumped into the Ringmaster talking to his brother. The mysterious Ringmaster told them that if they ran away to join his circus they need never be separated ever again. Suspicious but drunk on stories of clowns and shows, they agreed. The circus made sure that neither would be ever be separated by melding them together into one body and transforming Alex into a hideous mockery of life. Now the two of them have no choice but to serve the circus that separated them from their loving home but ensured that neither would ever lose the other.
Funhouse.
The Stephen Brothers' Funhouse is legendary in occult circles, as it is a labyrinth of warped mirrors and shifting hallways sprawling well beyond its earthly dimensions. Within its corridors, reality itself is uncertain: one visitor may do battle with his own warped reflections, only to find his brother's blood on his hands. Another may think she has left the Funhouse behind, returning to the carnival's attractions, only to turn a corner and discover she is merely in another cunning illusion. Some are never seen again.
Gypsy Seer/Madam Gehenna.
Gypsy women have had the second sight for longer than Romani folklore has been around. They have used this gift to guide their families from town to town and to ward off evil. For the right price they could always be persuaded to do a reading or conjour the shade of a lost love one.
Madame Gehenna is the name used by an outcast seer. She is the sometime paramour of the Ringmaster and seems to share some control over the Circus itself. She uses her gifts to entice young men and women into her tent where she either steals their souls for her own ends or offers them their most desirable wish, only to turn around and corrupt them into one of the freaks that are bound to the carnival.
Hearteater/Tunnel Terror.
This ancient Egyptian spirit was brought forth by the Hellbound to perform sacrifices and slay nosy investigators. After Rasputin had a clash with the malevolent Ringmaster, he sent the demon spirit after him only to find that the circus had already claimed it. Though still bound by Rasputin and Morgana's magic's, the carnival now had it working for it. The Hearteater lurks in the darkness of the Tunnel of Love, where it picks off unlucky lovers and devouring their hearts.
Hungry Bertha/Big Big Bertha.
Bertha was once an up and coming teenage model, with dreams of treading the catwalks of New York and Paris. Like many models she was always concerned about her weight and appearance, and it was this that would be her undoing. When the Stephen Brothers circus rolled into town one warm September afternoon, she was drawn to it like all the townsfolk. At Madam Gehenna's booth she had her fortune told and wished that she would have a body that everyone would remember. The pact was sealed with this careless wish.
Ever since she has been one of the freaks, stuffing her face with whatever was thrown to her. She truely does now have a body that all will remember for the rest of their very short lives. Her hunger is so great that the Ringmaster has to let her out at night to roam the town where they have stopped, just so that she can fulfill that ever-gnawing hungry in her grotesque stomach!
Johnny Dead/Billy Stank.
During the American Civil War, the battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg were two of the bloodiest fought. Many men died on those days and the very ground was stained red with blood. Every so often, the ground gives up its dead and the two sides fight the battle again.
Knife thrower/the Great Slicini
Knife throwing is a traditional circus act, and the blindfolded thrower relies on both great skill and cunning tricks to achieve this stunt. Rare is the talent to blindly strike multiple moving targets - rarer still if these targets are hostile and deadly! Of these rare knife throwers, the greatest talent is said to be the Great Slicini, recently added to the Stephen Brothers carnival. Here he delights and amazes the crowds, and secretly protects them from the evils that stalk the big-top.
Kuranes/King Kuranes.
Originally a nameless hobo who could enter and shape the mysterious dreamlands, he became Kuranes and now rules over the dream city of Ooth-Nargai. Though his original body is long since dead, he can for short times reform it in the waking world. The mysterious travelling freak show called the Stephen Brothers circus has caused ripples throughout the dreamlands, and has drawn Kuranes attention. He is well away of the nature of his evil force and works to destroy it, so that it no longer plagues the sleep of men.
Monster Patrol/Bailey and Jameson.
Bailey and Jameson are brother and sister who lead a small gang of fellow kids around the area solving mysteries and fighting monsters. Usually they find out that the "monster" is just one of the adults in disguise, but they have found that a few monsters are real. Now they just need to make sure their parents never learn about their monster hunting.
Officer 7.
The trail of deaths and disappearances caused by the Stephen Brothers carnival has not gone unnoticed over the last thirty years. FBI agent Luke Townsend, code named Officer 7 was an agent assigned to the circus several years ago. Through contacts high up in the Bureau he was advised to take some rather unorthodox tools with him. Unfortunately they seem not to have worked as the FBI lost contact with him a few days later.
Officer 13.
An associate of Fox Mulder in the mid 1990's, Jason Webb took it upon himself to continue the case regarding the Stephen Brothers Carnival. He had already been talked into believing in the supernatural by his dealings with the X-Files and was prepared for anything. For some time now he has been tailing the circus, investigating clues and talking to occultists. He believes that the circus itself is an evil supernatural entity and that finding a way to destroy it is the next step in his investigation.
Officer Friendly.
Agent Joshua Friendly was recruited into the FBI straight from the police academy in Washington. His first case, an investigation into the Sunny Murders in the mid-80's made him a bureau-wide name. Subsequent cases handed to him led him into investigations that involved werewolves, zombies and Pandora Labs. After one case involving the Wolf Pack, Joshua was recruited into the Order of St. George. Using their resources as well as his own he has managed to destroy a fair number of monsters. Unfortunately, his desire to investigate these cases has him catalogued as "spooky" by his fellow agents.
Phantom Maneater/Snuggles.
In the heart of darkest Africa, there are stories of phantom predators that the locals call "He Who Vanishes Into The Trees." They are the ghosts of big cats hunted and killed for sport by ruthless hunters. Now they stalk the jungles protecting their former territories from mortals who should not be there.
Snuggles is the name of one such spirit cat which has been captured by the forces that govern the Stephen Brothers carnival. It performs tricks and entertains the audiences during the shows, but by night slips its bonds and stalks the streets of the current town for potential prey while seeking for the soul that it feels drawn to.
Pierced Zombie.
Albert Parker, the "Porcupine", was the first mortal soul corrupted into the service of the Stephen Brothers Circus. He was a remarkable character, who could not feel pain and seemed able to shrug off any wound inflicted. He even for a time served as the assistant to one of the original knifethrowers until one axe hit him in the face and ended his career. However, the Circus decided to recruit him and the following night he arose from the dead!
Rabid Bear/Bobo.
The Stephen Brothers carnival keeps several unstable bears in its animal cages. All of them have been augmented with teeth and claws of steel. The Ringmaster makes them fight one another with bets placed upon them by cruel and greedy patrons. Should they die, the circus simply restores them for the next day.
Bobo is the oldest bear in the circus's retinue. He is so old that his augmentations have become rusty and crusted with dried blood. Usually Bobo is left alone in his cages but there are times when the circus demands a sacrifice of many souls that Bobo is awoken and let loose upon the families and patrons of the big top.
Ringmaster.
This mysterious (and perhaps demonic) figure named Mr Dark, leads the Stephen Brothers circus around the dustbowl towns of the Midwest. He and his carnival freaks lure towns folks to their deaths or worse, by offering them their deepest desires. However, where the Stephen Brothers carnival is concerned, such wishes always go awry.
Example: Something Wicked This Way Comes.
She-Wolf/Lupina.
Female werewolves are sexual predators not unlike vampires. Their human forms are nearly always highly attractive with an animal magnetism that draws men to them. It is only when the change comes upon, whether on a full moon or under the grip of sexual abandonment that their lover finds himself with a real animal.
Lupina was a member of the Wolfpack until she was captured and sold to the Stephen Brothers circus. Now she performs for the patrons and protects the circus from those who would see it destroyed or banished. She longs for release so that she can rejoin her pack.
Snake Charmer/Miss Slyther.
A young Indian girl became possessed by a powerful snake spirit when she was a child. Despite attempts to exorcise the serpent, the spirit failed to be removed. From sharing a physical and mystical bond with the child, it provided her with its own powers. In the late 1970's her family emigrated to America in search of a new life, preferably with the horror left behind but it was not to be. The spirit-possessed child murdered her parents and run away into the night. She was found by the entity that is the Stephen Brothers carnival and given a place within its walls where her talents could be put to a better use.
Snake Oil Salesman/Dr. Barker.
These circus figments peddle unusual and costly potions to gullible visitors. In truth they sell potions made from real snake venom, secure in the knowledge that they circus will have moved on before anyone dies from these medicinal concoctions.
Dr. Barker is the dominant figment at the Stephen Brothers carnival. Unlike the other figments, he has a will of his own granted by the carnival itself. Also, unlike others serving the carnival, he can leave the funfair by day to further the circus' aims when most townsfolk are visiting.
Tattooed Man/Abel Terror.
Students of the occult know that words have power. Symbols and ancient icons have greater power. A few occultists around the globe cover their bodies with mystical tattoos which grant them incredible power. Some offer protection from harm while others conjure spirits from the realm of the dead to do the summoners bidding.
Abel Terror is the name of a freak at the Stephen Brothers carnival. He willingly gave himself to the circus in return for more and more power. For allowing the carnival to siphon power from him, the freak show periodically adds new tattoos to his skin.
Templar.
A seemingly immortal man, the Templar has history dating back at least two centuries by those who research him. Formerly a member of the Order of St. George until 1800 when he turned his back upon their ways to fight evil as he sees fit. He seems dedicated to hunting down vampires and werewolves above all else but will fight any monster that he encounters on his travels.
Example: Van Helsing.
Tracker.
Sir Benjamin Covington Smythe was born in Lancashire England in June, 1871, and in his youth excelled in both history and military studies. He served under Sir Horatio Kitchener at the Battle of Omdurman, where he dissapeared for two years into the dark heart of Africa. Upon his reappearance, he spoke little of the experience, though his journals speak of a native cult called The Bloody Tongue. In 1902 he relocated to Massachusetts, taking up the position as professor of world history at Miskatonic University, though this did not stop him from making yearly trips back into Kenya in pursuit of... something. His last trip was in 1927 where neither he nor his faithful hound, Zeus, returned from the heart of the dark interior.
Undead Vendor/Southpaw.
Some zombies are but mindless cadavers perpetually seeking flesh. Others retain a distant echo of their living identities, and exhibit fragments of personality. Typically their only motive is some overwhelming emotion - revenge from the grave, or seeking a lost love - but in unusual cases, a zombie might simply return to work and seek to carry on as normal - as normal as a zombie can get.
The Stephen Brothers have exploited this phenomenon, populating their carnival with undead staff and daring their visitors to see through the ruse; most assume it's clever makeup. Their head vendor, Southpaw, is conscientious about keeping his refreshments stocked, particularly those intended for his undead brethren - after all, everyone needs refreshments!
Vampire Roustabout/Bloody Tom.
The Stephen Brothers Carnival makes use of many supernatural creatures drawn to it's unholy aura. The savage vampire known as Bloody Tom leads a small brood of his own serving as nocturnal staff and handymen. Their reward is the feasting on fresh blood in every town they visit.
Bloody Tom is a fringe member of the Bloodcall. He has been drawn away from that cabal's destiny by the siren call of the carnival. He is known as a bestial creature who prefers to sup from the smashed remains of his dead and dying prey rather than from the still beating heart.
Victorian Vampire/Gerard.
Some vampires are never quite able to cast off the fashions and mannerisms of their mortal lives. As years stretch into centuries, this can make hunting more difficult, a fact which compels many to sire more progeny in hopes of remaining in touch with the world. All too often these creatures become degenerate recluses, their very humanity but a distant memory, their bodies warping into bestial Nosferatu. Gerard was resigned to his fate until he discovered the Stephen Brothers carnival, a place where his eccentric demeanor would be regarded as a charming curiosity, and where his prey would be young and plentiful.
Wacko Jacko Lantern.
This unfortunate monster was an extra on Michael Jackson's Thriller video. Afterwards he became obsessed with the pop star and started following him around, dressing like him and even imitating him. One Halloween night he decided to go to a party as his idol but instead of a lively party, he was confronted with a scene of ghoulish slaughter. Zombies had broken into the house and devoured the party guests. After one bite he was transformed into a zombie as well, though the powers of evil found it amusing to leave him the powers of his pop star idol.
Wild Man/Wild Man of Borneo.
In the deepest darkest corners of the world there still live tribes of primitive men that are more beast than human. Explorers and adventurers in the 18th century spoke at long length of such tribes and the barbaric acts they performed, including cannibalism and sacrifices to ancient gods. What if such tribes still existed today, locked away from the 21st century by rapidly dwindling rainforests?
Michael Ashbury toured California as the infamous "Wild Man of Borneo." His look was a mix of black tar smeared over his body with plenty of horsehair. When the Stephen Brothers Ringmaster offered him a summer job touring with them, he couldn't refuse the offer. However as the weeks went on it became harder and harder to remove the make-up and to escape the act. By the end of the summer, he had become the creature that was the mask!
Wolf Boy/Jak-Jak the Wolf Boy.
In some corners of the world, children are born covered in a dense hair. Throughout recorded history they are usually known as Wolf Children. Legends said that upon reaching adulthood they were more likely to become werewolves themselves. Those legends were not always accurate as the number of child-wolves shows.
Jack Armiger was a good boy who grew up in a pleasant home with loving parents. When the circus rolled into town he asked if he could go, and his parents took him the next day. As he wandered the boardwalks taking in the sights and sounds he began to see the monsters. The grown ups never did and his many attempts to warn them fell upon deaf ears. That night as he lay trembling in his bed, the freaks came and collected him, stealing poor Jack from his bed. Brought before the Ringmaster, he was chastised for "crying wolf" and as punishment was transformed into Jak-Jak the Wolf Boy. Now the poor child has no life but that which the Ringmaster allows - that of a savage wolf-creature stalking the late night stragglers at the Stephen Brothers circus.
Yama.
The spirit of death and fate in Indian mythology, Yama is one of the ancient forces in the universe. How it came to be in the service of both the Hellbound and the Stephen Brothers Carnival is unknown. What is understood is that it advices the Ringmaster on potential destinations, the towns most likely full of greedy immoral souls ripe for the plucking.
Zombie Strongman/Herculon.
Herculon was the resident strongman at the Shyster & Marks Brothers Traveling Circus during the 1950's. He worked the sideshows and the big top to feed his ever growing family. When the S&M circus reached a small town suffering a zombie outbreak, the circus was overrun. Herculon ate most of his family before disappearing into the night. He was next sighted working the big top of the Stephen Brothers Circus over a decade later. The Ringmaster must have a way to control him, otherwise Herculon would have tried to eat all the flesh he could.
Zombie Ventriloquist/Morty and Chuckles.
Morton was never best the performer but he loved his art and especially enjoyed performing for children. The adults were harder to impress and it was on one such night that Morton joined the ranks of the supernatural. When his act when down badly with the audience, Morton suffered a fatal heart attack. His spirit somehow bonded to the dummy he carried while his body animated somehow. That night, his body broke into the police station and recovered the dummy. The two of them set out that night to revisit upon his hecklers exactly what had happened to him.
Nightmares
50-Foot Ex Girlfriend.
So the story goes, in the 1960?s a young woman named Jessi Munroe was used and dumped by her then boyfriend. Driven to emotional extremes she turned to the mad science of her father, a researcher at Pandora Labs for a means to extract her vengeance. Using mad science and occult formulas in her father?s lab, she grew to an immense size and returned to kill her ex-lover. The small mid-west town where she lived was destroyed and she was stopped by local national guard reserves. What became of the boyfriend is unknown.
Example: Attack of the 50 Foot Woman.
Amazon.
The epitome of feminism, the Amazon is a woman pushed just too far. A string of abusive boyfriends, one night stands and sexist work colleagues has snapped her mind. Men must be taught to respect women is the one driving goal in her mind, and she follows those voices with a savageness unbridled.
Ancient Mariner.
The tale of the Ancient Mariner as recorded by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, is a true story. The mariner killed an Albatross and was cursed by the Grim Reaper to a slow death at sea alone. The Mariner atoned and was briefly allowed to return to shore to be forgiven of his sin. Unfortunately the Grim Reaper has a wicked sense of humour, and drove the Mariner insane by refusing to let him die.
Android.
Following the disastrous incident around Project 314, the military heads of the Initiative shelved the idea of creating advanced soldiers in their fight against HST's (Hostile Sub-Terrestrials). However recently, with some outside assistance from Pandora Labs, their scientists have been performing cybernetic upgrades on volunteers. Again these experiments have gone awry as the human mind cannot cope with the changes imposed upon them, and without the application of Aasimov's 3 laws, the test subjects have become deranged killers.
Example: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Episode - Primeval).
Archangel.
Just as demons are real, so are angels. Angels rarely get involved in the affairs of the mortal world but there do come times when are summoned by priests of the Order of St. George when they feel that there is no other course of action. Archangels appear as the viewers expect them to look, and on at least one occasion this has gifted them with firearms.
Black Knight.
Not all figments materialise in the physical world. Some remain confined to the dreamscape where they torment sleepers. The Black Knights were holy knights during the crusades, but there deeds were far from Christian. They murdered and tortured the Muslim defenders with a dark passion. Eventually their order was dispatched by there own allies who were appalled by the evil actions undertaken. When Rasputin escaped Hell, the Black Knights were offered the chance to follow the Headless Horseman. Only a short time after their release, Rasputin bound the Black Knights to the Dreamlands in order to prevent them finding him.
Butcher.
Lupo's family butcher shop lies in a quiet corner of Red Hook, New York. When the borough was the target of a werewolf in the late 1980's, Lupo was the man who hunted it down and dispatched it, saving the life of two Order operatives. Since then, Lupo's family have been nominal allies to the Order of St. George, and protect the borough of Red Hook from supernatural predation.
Centipede.
In the aftermath of major environmental disasters and the increasing use of chemicals in farming, it the natural world that suffers most. Radiation and chemical usage have caused mutation in insectoid wildlife. Throughout the world under the surface crawling life has mutated, grown and become very, very hungry. When a luckless teenager vanishes or a hitchhiker fails to arrive, the police look for a murderer or serial killer. They never look for the true culprit, lying in the hard earth below their feet.
Coven Of Witches.
Witches still exist despite them being the subject of myth and ridicule. They gather in a small covens to work their will in the world. Though they work black magic and traffic with hellspawn and lovecraftian entities, they are often not evil just desiring to be left alone. It is only when curious investigators start poking their noses in or they suffer unfair treatment by locals that they call upon the forces of hell.
Death.
The Grim Reaper is served by a host of smaller entities that gather the dying around the world. These figments do not share the wait it out attitude of their creator, instead seeking out potential prey and ending their lives there and then.
Demon Bunny.
The entities known as Demon Bunnies to paranormal researchers are in fact another failed experiment by scientists working on the Initative Project. It has long been understood that animals can sense the supernatural, and the scientists performed experiments to increase their awareness to aid hunters in their searches. Unfortunately, the experiments went awry and the poor test animals were transformed into supernatural creatures themselves. Much like regular bunnies, these entities have multiplied and spread across the dimensions always bringing terror in their wake.
Dominatrix.
The mysterious leather clad lovely known as the Dominatrix in the London press appeared on the street scene a couple years ago. The press reports her as a high class prostitute catering to the rich and famous, but in truth she is a hunter of evil in the dark corners of London. Her reasons are her own but the monsters she encounters are never the same again afterwards, assuming they survive.
Farmer.
Ghouls are an ancient race that has been with us since prehistoric times. They still dwell with us, lairing under cemeteries and abandoned buildings, occasionally coming to the surface for reasons unknowable to us. In the American MidWest, there exists a secretive enclave of ghouls and their half-human descendents, living out a quiet existence away from the eyes of curious investigators. When trespassers do stumble upon them, their flesh and blood goes to feed the ghouls and nourish the crops.
Flasher.
We live in a time when the news is full of sex crimes and perverts. In very rare occasions our fears of such instances can generate figments to torment us. One recorded figment terrorised a small American town in the mid 1990?s and is recorded in the achieves of the BPRD as the Flasher. This figment had the unusual power of drawing its victims into the shadowlands that surround the mortal world, never to be seen again.
Freddy Krueger.
Freddy was a serial killer who focused on murdering the children of Springwood. When the parents of the murdered children caught up with him, they burnt him alive in his own boiler room. Upon his death, Freddy was visited by three dream demons (possibly entities from the Dreamlands?) who offered him a twisted form of immortality. Freddy accepted and has haunted the dreams of the Springwood teenagers ever since, killing them in their sleep.
Example: A Nightmare on Elm Street and Freddy vs. Jason.
Genie.
Genies (or Djinn, in the original Arabic) are demons found in Middle Eastern legend. Capable of altering the fabric of reality with a thought, these demons tempt weak minded mortals with their greatest desires, only to twist those wishes into something terrible. Once the granted wishes are used up, the poor victim's soul is claimed by the Genie who delivers it to his masters in Hell before returning to the Earth in search of more prey.
Example: Wishmaster.
Giant.
Legend says that giants existed in ancient times, where they fought gods and mortal heroes but were slain or driven away long before the rise of science. A few giants have reappeared in their ancestral lands across Europe over recent years but rarely stay, drawn back to wherever their race was banished too. Some occultists believe that they are merely figments created by human imagination.
Goat-Headed Satanist.
The largest and most powerful of satanic cults around the world are served by minor demonic entities that wear the form of goat-headed men. They serve the cult as priests and when needed, they collect sacrifices. These creatures are not beholden to the cults they associate with but instead serve the will of their dark master which may on occasion, be at odds with the cult. In such instances, should the cult leader object, the cult becomes the next sacrifice.
Gremlin.
No one knows where these little horrors really came from, but it is assumed that they are a form of unseelie faerie creature. They begin life as cute furry friendly creatures until they are fed between the hours of midnight and dawn. Then they undergo a transformation into hideous gremlins. These vicious little horrors play dangerous pranks on people, finding it very amusing to see death and mayhem.
Gremlins have also been sighted during wartime. During the Second World War, Gremlins were responsible for damage to aircraft, sometimes while they were in flight!
Example: Gremlins, and the Twilight Zone (episode: Nightmare at 20,000 Feet).
Grendal.
The mythical creature that was the basis for the Viking saga is very real. For over a thousand years he has slept away the years regenerating the injuries inflicted by Beowulf. Grendal emerges from his lair from time to time, seeking to test the skill of the warriors in this new world. Those that fail to beat him become Grendal?s next meal.
Guillotine.
Sometimes its not the spirit of the deceased that comes back. Sometimes? it's something else. Rage and anger are strong emotions that tie the dead to the mortal world, and the same can create a figment to do the revenge rather than the deceased. The Guillotine was a figment created by such emotion, beheading anyone who entered its abode. Historical reports put the first appearance of these figments shortly after the French revolution.
Imaginary Friend.
Almost every child creates an imaginary friend. Those who are tormented by evil forces or abusive family members may find their imaginary friends becoming real and protecting them from harm. They rarely last long once the threat to their friend has been dealt with, but they may well return if harm once again comes them.
Inbreeder.
Most figments are created by the fears of a person, or community, but sometimes a figment can come into existence by the atmosphere instead a location. Empty homes in the Deep South of America or East Anglia in the UK, have created figments known as Inbreeders. These parts of the world have stories of inbred families and the horrors that that entails, and such stories have been known to create these nightmarish entities.
Jack In the Box.
An unusual demonic entity that dwells solely in the Dreamlands, this creature appears in dreams as a mysterious toy box. Though it is a frightful thing, its appearance draws the dreamer to it and holds them there, playing with it never to awaken. When the mortal body finally dies from starvation or dehydration, the Jack In the Box strikes, stealing their soul and the moment of death.
Jane Cleaver.
A quiet suburban wife and mother of two, Jane was one of those twisted murderers who everyone else saw as normal and sweet. Her sweetmeats and pies were to die for... literally. Eventually she even killed and served up her own family to the neighbours. It?s always the quiet ones you have to watch out for.
Jason Vorhees.
An undead serial killer who stalks and slaughters those foolish enough to visit Camp Crystal Lake. Jason was a deformed child who drowned at the summer camp while the camp staff were off fooling around. Since then he has returned time and time again, unstoppable and unkillable.
Example: Friday the 13th movies, and Freddy vs. Jason.
Lawn Gnome.
Faeries are mischievous spirits who delight in tormenting and harming others. One breed of faerie takes on the form of an innocent looking lawn ornament until the time is right and its victim comes just too close. No one ever suspects the garden ornaments, and few ever seem to notice that at each home where mysterious murders take place that they all have the same gnomes in their gardens.
Luchador.
A former professional Mexican wrestler, the masked Luchador was forced to turn to untested steroids when he began to lose matches. The chemicals in the drugs mutated his body, making him incredibly strong and mutating his body. Unable to compete properly again, he took to fighting in the underground fights, which is where he learnt of the monsters surrounding mankind. Since then, he has partaken in numerous battles to the death between monsters organised around the world, in order to save and protect the innocent.
Mime Monster.
Unlike most figments which are created by fear and negative emotions, the entities recorded by the BPRD as Mime Monsters seem to be quite the opposite. The Mime Monsters seem to be protectors of those who give them form, guarding them from other monsters in the night. Reports place them primarily in France and parts of Canada, though in recent years they have been encountered in other parts of the world.
Museum Wanderer.
Museums at night can be scary places for those not used to the sights and sounds of the darkened building. Museum Wanderers are figments animating physical remains. They arise when certain conditions are right and prowl the corridors and exhibits seeking fresh victims. These figments then fade with the rising sun.
Nessie.
Nessie is the name given to the monster (in fact there are several down there) that inhabits the Scottish lake known as Loch Ness. These plesiosaurs have slept at the bottom of the Loch for 65 million years. They first awoke in 565AD where it is said they attacked a swimmer before being driven away by Saint Columba. Since that time there have many numerous sightings, most in the 20th century, though no attacks have been reported, but the Loch does have its share of missing persons. Missing persons or a tasty snack?
Pirate Zombie.
Captain and owner of the ghost ship, Elizabeth Dane, which was run aground at Antonio Bay in 1880 by locals who did not want his leper colony so close to their town. In 1980, he and his zombie crew (the former lepers) arose from their watery graves to seek revenge on those who caused their death, all under cover of a thick and unnatural fog.
Example: The Fog.
Playboy Monster.
Demons strike most at mortals who showcase the most debase aspects of the seven sins. Lust especially is a favoured sin for the infernal hordes. Some of these demonic entities prefer to hunt and kill the sickest sexist perverts, dragging them to hell for their sinful ways. These entities wear the forms of stunningly beautiful young women until such time as they get their prey alone. Then they undergo a horrific transformation, often during the making out part of the evening, and toy with their prey before ending their lives.
Pod People.
Hell has its own plants as well as its fair share of tortured souls. Such vegetation however has an unnatural intelligence that drives it to procreate. The roots of such plants push up through the ground and the dimensional barriers, until they sprout on the surface of the Earth. Pods quickly form, and ensnare anyone foolish enough to get too close, consuming them and replacing them.
Poltergeist.
A noisey spirit. Poltergeists are the spirits of people who have become stuck on earth unable to move on. They are emotional spirits and this creates telekinetic effects that cause furniture to move and sharp implements to be thrown at unsuspecting victims. Sometimes, it is the psychic energy released by pubescent teenagers that allows poltergeists to fully manifest, and other times its just a connection that the spirit feels towards someone.
Example: Poltergeist.
Quarterback Slasher.
Sometimes the pressure put upon students to be the best, study hard and play good football is too much. Every year a handful of students snap, especially when the coach doesn't put them on the team, and they stalk the campus grounds in full football gear and mask taking their frustrations out upon the students, faculty and police investigators. They are nearly always caught but not before the body count reaches a good number.
Santa.
Also known as St. Nick or Father Christmas, this aspect of all things Christmas has a history dating back many hundreds of years. In recent years the number of children growing up to be evil has increased and Santa has decided to make a stand against the growing naughtiness. Joining forces with the Order of St. George, Santa rides out every December 24th delivering toys to all the good children, and a serious asswhooping to evil monsters.
Sasquatch.
For hundreds of years there have been urban legends about the mysterious Bigfoot. Tales tell of it being reclusive, threatening and curious. The Sasquatch are the guardians of the natural world, protecting it from monsters and thoughtless campers alike. While usually friendly, these creatures can enter a savage rage when defending their woodland homes.
Satanist.
These are the cultists that Rasputin has gathered around himself in his plans to release the Great Old Ones. Since most people do not know of Great Cthulhu and his ilk, they are reported as Satanists. Irony indeed, since Rasputin has escaped the grip of Satan himself and returned to the world. This act of resurrection has strengthened his flock?s faith in their master.
Sewer Crawler.
New York and other larger cities all have urban legends of monsters in their sewer system. Most of the time they are just myths, but in a few occasions those legends couple with the fears of those municipal workers who work in the tunnels can create short lived horrors. Sewer Crawlers can take many forms from giant albino alligators to swarms of tentacled horrors that surge up from the effluent to drag sewer workers to their deaths.
Shaman.
In the back woods of Massachusetts, there exists the spirit of a former Native American shaman. His spirit protects the area from the monsters that preyed on his tribe, and now the white man that has settled his ancestral lands. He has become part of the land itself and will protect it until his spirit finally releases itself to the next world.
Shoggoth.
The Shoggoth were the servitor creations of the Old Ones when the Earth was young. They served as guards and slave workers until the revolted against their Antediluvian masters. They now dwell in the depths of the sea and beneath the great ice sheets of Antarctica. A few serve Great Cthulhu and the Deep Ones, guarding the corpse city of R'leyh.
Skin Suit.
Benjamin Gray came from a dysfunctional family. He received numerous beatings from his father for trivial things, and it began to have a serious psychological effect upon young Ben. On the night of his 14th birthday, he murdered his father and skinned him. Thinking that if he wore the skin he would become his father, he layered the skin onto his own. But it was not enough. Benjamin has murdered over a dozen people and placed their skins over his own.
Snookums.
After Sunny was removed from his position as a top children's presenter, he was replaced by another actor. The old friendly clown was gone, replaced by Snookums the friendly dinosaur. Shortly afterwards, the show was cancelled due to low audience figures and the new actor was led loose. The curse of Sunny continued, and Snookum returned time and time again to hunt down and dismember those who ended his reign on children's television.
Street Samurai.
The self styled Street Samurai are a band of gang members in Los Angeles who have lost family and friends to the monsters in the night. They now operate together to hunt down and destroy the creatures that prey on humanity. While most of them consider themselves guardians, there are those in the gang who care not whether innocents are harmed in their hunts just so long as the monsters are destroyed.
Succubus.
A Succubus (Plural: Succubi) are female demons of sensual pleasure. They wear a pleasing face, one that will be found attractive and irresistible to men and women. Once they have their victim alone, they engage in sexual activity and slowly drain that person of their life force until nothing is left by a desiccated corpse - literally loved to death. They then claim their soul for the sin of lust.
Survivalist.
People laugh at them and their silly redneck ways, but truth is that when the time comes, we'll be turning to them for help. Slightly mad and sitting upon a stockpile of guns and ammo to make any army jealous, these crazies have been telling us that something was coming for years now. Its time to buckle up and listen, or get chomped down on by the first zombie to cross your path.
Example: Dawn of the Dead.
Swordsman.
Demons delight in offering up power and immortality to the unwary, only to pervert it. However, even demons can make errors in judgment from time to time. One such error relates to the secretive Swordsmen. These poor men made deals only to receive a limited form of immortality and had their arms replaced with sharp blades. When they realized that they had been duped, they banded together to hunt down and slay the demon that did this to them.
Tommyknocker.
Tommyknockers are small nature spirits that inhabit the dark earth. When disturbed by mining or construction operations they have been known to enter a furious state of mind unless placated by food, alcohol or wealth. The most well documented Tommyknockers are those found in Cornish tin mines in England.
Tooth Fairy.
Figments are more easily drawn from the Faerie realm than anywhere else due to its close ties to the human imagination. A common enough figment generated by children is that of the tooth fairy ? a friendly figment that comes to collect teeth and replace them with coins. However, a frightened child may in fact generate a dark fey that comes to collect all the child?s teeth, whether loose or not.
Unholy Trinity.
These three spirits were once nuns who took the catholic teachings too far. Children in their care were regularly physically abused in order to drive out the demons in them. Eventually the children took matters into their own hands, and on one night returned their brutality in spades. The three souls were offered a deal by a trio of dream demons - return to the mortal world, shrouded in the dreamlands, and continue their good deeds. The three sisters accepted the offer and to this day continue their dark punishments.
Voodoo Baron.
In Haiti and Louisiana, voodoo is a very real power wielded by dark sorcerers. Cults centered around a charismatic leader will commit murder and worse in the name of their chosen Loa. Voodoo Barons use their dark magic?s to inflict pain upon their enemies and rise up the dead as mindless zombies.
Voodoo Priest.
To help combat the recent surge in zombie risings, the Order of St. George, maintains contact with several voodoo priests who do not work black magic. So called ?white voodoo? or Voodoun, can easily put a halt to a zombie rising if enough faith is poured through the priest. It is through the assistance of these voodoo priests that the world has not yet been overrun by the hungry dead.
Werewolf Leader.
The former leader of the werewolves of Eastern Europe was Lucian. After his death at the hands of vampires whilst seeking to free his kind from their mastery over them, another arose from the surviving werewolves to take his place. Not as old or experienced, the new leader has still been accepted as the alpha. He plans on continuing Lucian?s work to free his people from their former masters? predations.
Zombie Chambermaid.
Those who dabble in the occult rarely come out of it unharmed for such things should not be trifled with. One apocryphal tale tells of a wealthy Frenchman who held a s?ance in the 1930?s and summoned forth a demon which he ordered to do his bidding. The demon merely laughed and departed. However, before it left, it took the life of his chambermaid and reanimated her as a flesh-eating corpse. Later that night, the Frenchman learnt the error of his ways as he was devoured for his hubris.
Zombie Cheerleader.
When the initial zombie outbreaks began to appear in the 1960's the undead were mindless things shambling about in search of warm flesh. After each subsequent outbreak, they seem to be maintaining more and more of their human nature. No clearer case of this exists than the mysterious zombie cheerleaders of Sunnydale. Bitten by zombies shortly before a practice match for the Sunnydale Razorbacks, these female zombies were able to masquerade as real cheerleaders long enough to get prey close enough to eat.
Zombie Dorothy.
Dorothy?s trip into the Dreamlands left her touched by mystical energies. When those Dreamlands retouched the mortal world recently in Kansas, the energies released animated her body as a zombie, but returned her to the age and appearance as she saw herself in those dreams.
Zombie Drill Sergeant.
Recent zombie uprisings have left the undead with a sense of self, albeit a dumbed down one. On one occasion, a minor outbreak occurred in a US military training camp, and the first victim was the drill instructor. Arisen into undeath he still maintained the ability to direct his fellow dead against their former comrades.
Zombie Lion.
Another unusual appearance in Kansas as been sightings of a supposed zombie lion. Sightings of the creature are rare, leading zombie investigators to believe that the creature is cowardly and shuns the company of other zombies. Despite its allusiveness, the number of bodies found missing their brains is slowly mounting.
Zombie Nerd.
An unusual experiment performed by Pandora Labs involved wiring a zombie up to a virtual reality machine to study the effects it may have on them. It was found that they became addicted to simulated reality and quickly broke down if removed from it for long periods of time.
Zombie Reindeer.
It is not just humans that can become infected with whatever animates the dead. Its rare, but on occasion animals have been reported. The most recorded event took place in the late 1970?s when a Swedish ski resort was cut off for a week by snowstorms. By the time rescuers reached the resort high up in the mountains only a handful of survivors were recovered, and they told a crazy story of unkillable flesh-eating reindeer that snatched them one at a time. What happened to the zombie reindeer is not known but those in the know assume that they are still up there protected from decomposition by the bitter cold.
Zombie Scarecrow.
In certain quiet corners of the world it is considered a method of punishment to dress criminals up as scarecrows and leave them up in fields, keeping the crows off the crops even after death. Sometimes the rage and manic desires remain as well, animating the scarecrow with supernatural powers. Oddly, a BPRD study a few years back indicated that more of these creatures existed in Kansas than anywhere else in the world.
Zombie Tin Man.
After an unusual breaching of our world by the Dreamlands in the 1930?s, investigators found in the woods of Kansas, an unusual tin statue that resembled a corpse wielding an immense axe. The investigators never made it out alive, and their hearts kept the tin man animate for a few days. He stands there still to this day waiting for fresh prey to offer up their heart to him.
